Mirtha Dermisache
Mirtha Dermisache (1940–2012) began her artistic career in the 1960s. Her sense of artistic identity was strongly influenced by a 1971 letter from the French semiotician Roland Barthes, in which Barthes emphasised that what mattered in Dermisache’s work was not the message or expressive power of the text, but the very idea of the act of writing itself. Her work has been acquired by institutions such as Museo de Arte Moderno de Buenos Aires; MACBA Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona; Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid; Centre Pompidou, Paris; and the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam.
