Between Membranes

2021

We are not used to acknowledging that besides the things which we perceive with our senses, our life also takes place in the form of millions of different processes at a micro level. There is constant activity inside and between the cells for different purposes: birth and death, decay and production, self-protection from invaders, an exchange of information and endless cooperation and change. Lill’s paintings create a picture of this world of cells that remains outside of our everyday grasp. Instead of realism, the artist shows the cells through the lens of her imagination in order to illustrate the distance between human consciousness and the microscale of their organism. Rich in details and nuances, her abstract visual language refers to a view that opens to us when we are looking through a microscope.
