Mari Kurismaa is still fascinated with the “method of poetic analogies of surrealism and the technique of amazing comparisons of zen”, as presented in her master’s thesis. It is precisely this poetic juxtaposition that is also evident in her image of the chest of drawers and the Art Deco background pattern with a window motif by Adolf Loos in the middle. About her “professionally deformed” Art Deco-like background pattern, the artist says: “During the Soviet era, the Deco was like a secret language; it was passionately loved, obscuring and revealing at the same time.” The window motif from the architecture of the fiercely anti-ornamental Loos speaks for itself.
