An Iron and an Extinguished Moon
1992
“Coming up with the punchline – because, in my view, it is precisely the presence of a punchline that transforms a humorous or satirical drawing into something of a different order, into a caricature – resembles the work of a scientist or an engineer. You are intensely engaged in the logical analysis of all possible connections. Once the punchline is found, it must then be rendered in drawing. A well-drawn caricature is, of course, pleasing to look at, but that is not the main point here. In my graphic work, I am not concerned with inventing punchlines; instead, I let the mind run free – I fantasise, play with the line, experiment with techniques – presumably much as other graphic artists do.” – Jaak Olep. Priit Pärn kunstnikuna, Vikerkaar, 1988, No. 10 (quoted after Toomas Kall, Pärnograafia).
