Take Less Space and Disappear

2022

Artist Eglė Šimėnaitė presents a mesmerising lunar-inspired performance art piece Take Less Space and Disappear. In a pitch-black room, flickering images and sculptures of light gradually introduce the audience to the natural landscape, evocative of the Moon’s mysterious atmosphere. The soundscape features processed samples of water drops that grow into a thunderstorm and ocean waves, reminiscent of the gravitational pull of the Moon and the vastness of space.

Šimėnaitė adds a guiding element to the performance, introducing elements such as light, colour, texture, fog, rotation, fluidity, appearance and disappearance, much like an astronaut navigating through space. Through the use of reflective surfaces, objects and fog, she manipulates light and explores the contrast between light and darkness, shifting shapes and colours.

The performance ultimately invites the audience to contemplate topics like immateriality, weightlessness and borders of sleep, much like altered perceptions experienced by astronauts. It leaves the audience with a feeling of lightness and a dream-like state of mind, similar to the lunar influence on human consciousness.
